Kingdom Animalia and Kingdom Plantae contain links to all the species in our database. Selecting one of these links will take you to a page with a list of available species to view.
Basic Anatomy of Species contains body plans, clearly labelling the different parts of marine, terrestrial and avian organisms to help you identify and compare features.
The links in the Help menu will take you to a Search page (where you can search this website, as well as Fishbase and Wikipedia), this page, a Links page (containing related organisations and further information), and a Glossary of terms. If you click Add a Species you can send information to us which we can incorporate into our database.

When you are viewing the description of a kingdom, phylum, or species etc. you will notice that the classification levels are displayed on the right-hand side of the page. You can either click on a higher taxonomic level, or select a lower taxonomic level from the drop-down box at the end of the description. You can also use the 'Back' and 'Forward' buttons on your web browser to return to previously viewed pages.
Under the taxonomy profile there are further links to relevant external websites.

There are three main ways to find a specific species in WIOMWEB. Firstly by searching for it using our search page like any normal search engine. You can search using common or scientific names of species
If you know the rough taxonomic classification of the species you are looking for click on the appropriate Animalia or Plantae Icon on the homepage and this will take you into the website. Once in the website classification it is possible to navigate through the drop down menu system to the next available level of taxonomy, until family level. Each menu system has the common name next to the latin name.
So for example if you were looking for sea turtles and were unsure of their classification but knew they had a backbone and were reptiles, you would navigate to the reptile page and click on the drop down button labled Testudines (Turtles and Tortoises) from there you could navigate to Cheloniidae (Sea Turtles) like the menu below.
Once in the family page for many of the vertebrates, most notably the Actinopterygii (Ray-Finned Fish), you are confronted with two types of menu system. The simple drop down box you have used before and a drawn picture of a fish below the full taxonomic classification. If you click on this fish it will open a pop-up page of photos of fish, so if you know what the fish looks like but don't know what it's called you can see all the recorded species of that family in WIOMWEB. The species page presents a variety of information, in the title is the scientific classification of Genus followed by Species and then Common name.
The Taxonomic Profile is labled on the right, and higher levels can be accessed by clicking on the corresponding name.
The ID Description and Habitat is a brief description of techniques to ID the species in question, most likely habitat, size and in the case of marine species depth at which they can be found.
The IUCN Red List Status, has links to the online Red List, one of the most up to date websites regarding endangered species in the world run by the World Conservation Union (IUCN).
There also links on the bottom right of the page to other recommended online databases, such as Wikipedia, FishBase, The Australian Museum of Science and Edge of Reef. This allows for a further insight into the species and their families.
The Species Photo, the species photo isn't just a pretty picture, it is also a link to a holding page (CLICK HERE FOR EXAMPLE) where we keep all the photos available to WIOMWEB in for a particular species. Each of these photos are a llnk to a larger image of the photo.
